Mosque tutor sentenced for hitting kids

A TEACHER from a central Manchester mosque has been sentenced after hitting pupils while in class.

Ghulum Sarwar, 44, of Avondale Street, Cheetham Hill, was convicted of three offences of common assault at an earlier hearing at Manchester City Magistrates Court.

He was sentenced to a community order for 250 hours unpaid work to be completed within the next 12 months, and ordered to pay £935 costs on Monday 19 October 2009.

On 11 March 2009, the mother of a child who attends the mosque, called police to say her children had complained of being slapped by Sarwar.

Three boys aged eight, 11 and 12, had been hit round the head by Sarwar during lessons.

When arrested he confirmed he was the boys’ teacher and said he was aware that it is against the law to hit pupils.

PC Sobia Yasin, based at Collyhurst police station, said: “This is a simple case of common assault on young children the religious nature of the school or its teaching was not relevant in any way.

“We always treat allegations of assault seriously and will prosecute anyone who is found to have assaulted children.

“We have also been working closely with members of the community to ensure this case has been handled sensitively and members of the mosque have been supportive of the investigation.”

Manchester Mouth would like know when an assault on children is ever “simple” as the PC Yasin describes it – no matter what context it occurs in.
