Carr’s amputee gag causes a stir

JIMMY Carr has offended some disabled people by comments he made during his Manchester show.

The comedian appeared at the Manchester Apollo on Monday 26 October 2009 and made a joke about soldiers coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan as amputees, angering some service personal, their families, politicians and disabled groups.

“Say what you like about these servicemen amputees from Iraq and Afghanistan, but we are going to have a f*****g good Paralympic team in 2012,” The Metro quotes Carr as saying.

Reports suggest that the comment was met with a stunned silence and some believe that Carr has overstepped the mark.

Rena Watson’s son Matthew lost three limbs while serving in Afghanistan. She was offended by the comments as Matthew is now part of the Paralympic shooting team.

“It’s disgusting. . . there’s not a day goes by that I’m not in tears about what happened to my son and to think what’s happened has been made a joke of in front of a live audience of 2,500 people,” she said.

“I think Jimmy Carr should be made to put his money where his mouth is and make a sizeable donation to the charity for limbless ex-servicemen.”

Private Carl Clowes, who lost a leg after a bomb exploded in Helmand province, is a fan of Carr but believes people could take the comments the wrong way.

“I know how to take a joke, but there are others who are very depressed. They could take major offence at this and it might really affect them,” he said.

Colonel Richard Kemp, former British commander in Afghanistan, has come out and called Carr’s comments a disgrace and Bob Ainsworth, defence secretary, said troops deserved the utmost respect.

Carr has since apologised for his comments, saying he respects “the young men and women who put their lives on the line for this country”.

“I am sorry if anyone was offended but that’s the kind of comedy I do. If a silly joke draws attention to the plight of these servicemen, then so much the better. My intention was only to make people laugh,” added the comedian.
