Baseball bat shop owner fights off burglars

A JEWELLERY shop owner fought off robbers with a baseball bat.

Shortly before 11am on Thursday 29 October 2009, four masked men came into Bombay jewellers, on Derby Street, Bolton, brandishing a hammer and an axe.

They threatened the shopkeeper who initially retreated behind a security window. However, after seeing the robbers smash their way into a glass case the 46-year-old shopkeeper came out from behind the screen and started to hit one of the offenders with a baseball bat.

The offenders then left the shop empty-handed and got into a waiting red Ford Escort. The car was later found abandoned near Lever Street, Great Lever, and a 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of robbery and is currently being interviewed by officers.

The shopkeeper was uninjured in the incident.

The offenders are described as 18-20-years-old, Asian and between 5ft 9in and 6ft tall. All wore balaclavas.

Anyone with information is asked to call Bolton CID on 0161 856 5740 or independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
