Oasis Café celebrates second birthday

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: The Oasis Bubble Café has been going strong for two years

A CAFÉ that offers employment to people with mental health issues has just celebrated its second birthday.

The Oasis Bubble Café, which is based in the Mental Health Unit at Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport, has given 24 people with mental health issues employment and volunteering opportunities since it opened in 2007.

Councillor John Pantall, executive member for Adults and Health, said: “The Oasis Bubble Café has been a real success story with £8,000 a month going back into the mental health economy through the support of supply businesses and retailers run by people with mental health problems.”

A Community Interest Company, the modern vibrant café also provides an outlet for 14 different entrepreneurs who supply the café with goods, ranging from sandwiches and paninis to jewellery and art.

Set up in partnership by Stockport Council, Bubble Enterprises, and Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust in November 2007 the café has proved to be a welcome haven, popular with staff, patients and visitors.
