Idara Allstars win community cricket final

GOING BATTY: Cllr Sharif gives Allstars's Abdullah with the Man of the Match award for his play against Bilal Legends

IDARA Allstars have triumphed at the Sports For All Indoor Community Cricket Tournament.

Organized by Rochdale’s Sports For All (SFA), a group that promotes community cohesion through sport, the tournament (ICCT) was won for the second time by the Allstars, a team of young men from Milkstone and Deeplish, after they triumphed over the Bilal Legends, from Wardleworth.

Inspirational Allstars player-manager Asad claimed he was “delighted” for his team and said: “In the past few years we have consistently been well-placed in the tournament. We are now the only team in the last seven years to have won this trophy twice.”

The ICCT was played for just over a month during the Christmas holidays at the Moss Indoor Sports Arena and the final took place on Sunday 3 January 2010.

It was well supported and Councillor (Cllr) Mohammad Sharif, the Cabinet’s portfolio holder for regeneration, attended the final to applaud the efforts of all the competitors and SFA.

Hanief Mohammed, tournament organizer and SFA leader, said: “Idara Allstars played really well. Asad organized the team in a good way – playing youngsters for the group matches and then using the senior, more experienced team players for the finals.

“This is the seventh year we have run this tournament and it remains as competitive as ever. We would like to thank Matthew Moss staff, and Cllr Sharif, who have been supportive in ensuring the event was a success.”

Cllr Sharif, commended everyone’s efforts saying: “To see young people from different communities travel from various towns and neighborhoods, in poor weather conditions, to take part in this sort of initiative, shows the level of enthusiasm that exists for sport amongst our young people, and how it can be used as a vehicle to promote new beginnings and developments.”

The Fair Play award went to Halifax Tigers for their sportsmanship and objectivity.

The team will receive their awards at the 10th SFA Annual Awards evening to be held in February 2010.

If you want to get involved in these types of schemes or simply want to get fit in 2010 Sports For All run three weekly sporting clubs free of charge in Rochdale.
