Manchester’s largest gay nightclub closes

By Will Astbury

MANCHESTER’S largest gay nightclub has been closed with immediate effect.

Essential, which was once known as the “queen of the village” when it came to partying, has been shut to fund its owner’s boy-band venture.

Through a statement on the club’s website, owner Nigel Martin-Smith, said: “Essential Nightclub is to close with immediate effect.

“The venue will open later in the year as a brand new club.

“Queer bar (Martin-Smith’s other bar) is unaffected by this move – watch out for exciting development there, like the launch of Mornin Glory Fridays.

“THANK YOU for the past ten years – it’s been a blast!”

According to Pink Paper, former Take That manager Martin-Smith decided to close the club, which was once synonymous with cheesy pop and hard edged dance music, to concentrate on his latest boy-band Asbro.
