Manchester City Council top gay employer

FOR THE fifth year in a row, Manchester City Council is in the top ten in a list of Britain’s best 100 employers of lesbians and gay men.

Manchester City Council came eighth out of some 250 employers which were assessed as part of a workplace equality index, compiled by Stonewall, the lesbian and gay lobbying organisation.

Paul Fairweather, the council’s lead councillor on gay men’s issues, said: “I am delighted that our hard work has been praised again this year, and we are consistently recognised as one of the best employers of gay and lesbian employees.”

The index, which is compiled annually, identifies the 100 best employers of gay and lesbian employees in the UK. Participating organisations were questioned about their employment practices, including the benefits and support services they provided for lesbian, gay and bisexual employees.

The index ranks employers according to a range of criteria, from having a non-discrimination policy promoted to all staff, to advertising in the lesbian and gay media, and from supporting a lesbian and gay employee network group to having an openly lesbian or gay senior member of staff.

Manchester City Council’s lead councillor on lesbians’ issues, Mary Murphy, said: “It is fantastic to see our commitment acknowledged in these awards. We are dedicated to ensuring that all our lesbian, gay and bisexual employees work in an environment where they feel secure and confident that they can fulfil their potential.”

The council has a policy of monitoring the sexuality of its workforce to make sure that all employees are treated equally and recruitment and employment policies are fair.

Its lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender employee group plays a pivotal role in championing LGBT equality within the authority, and developing the organisation’s equality agenda. The group is regularly consulted on employment rights, benefits and development, as a key equality and diversity stakeholder.
