Stockport marks Holocaust Memorial Day

STOCKPORT Council will be marking the UK’s 10th annual Holocaust Memorial Day on Wednesday 27 January 2010.

The Council’s 14 libraries have organised special displays during the week to the mark the event which was established to remember the victims of the Holocaust and Nazi persecution, and to reflect on more recent genocides.

Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) aims to educate people about the dangers of anti-Semitism, racism and all forms of discrimination.

It is commemorated internationally on 27 January, the date in 1945 when the allies liberated Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration camp.

This year’s theme for HMD  is The Legacy of Hope.

As well as displays, library staff will direct people to booklists, for adults and children, on the HMD website http://www.hmd.org.uk.

Stockport libraries open on 27 January are Central Library, Bredbury, Brinnington, Edgeley, Great Moor, The Heatons and Reddish. Hazel Grove and Marple are open until 1pm on the day.
