Stocky celebrates LGBT History Month

FOR THE  fifith year running Stockport Council and its partners are celebrating Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender History Month in February.

The month, which originates from the USA using the successful formula of Black History Month, has taken place in the UK since 1994.

It highlights the lives and achievements of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) communities and individuals.

The borough is marking LGBT History Month with a series of events in Stockport.

The launch event Learn Adapt Grow is taking place at Stockport College on Monday 1 February 2010 and includes a speech from borough born former basketball star John Amaechi.

Some of the other local events taking place across the borough are as follows:

Saturday 13 February, from 11am at the Wellbeing Centre, Chestergate there will be a People Like Us Stockport (PLUS), the borough’s LGBT social group, event which includes a valentines/heritage walk tour of Stockport’s history spots.

On Monday 15 February, from 7:30pm there will be a Bring and Share Supper and Poetry Evening followed by a Sacred Space Meditation event for people of all faiths or none at St. Agnes Church, Gorton Lane, Reddish. For more information email clive@northreddish.org.uk.

On Thursday 18 February there will a LGBT parenting workshop and information sessions on legal issues at Hatworks.

The month ends with a grand finale event at the Arden Arms Pub on 27 February which starts at 6:30pm.

Cllr Martin Candler, executive member for customer focus, said: “LGBT History month is a really good chance for the whole of the borough to focus on the historic contributions of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender people to the civic, economic and cultural life of Stockport.

“It gives us the opportunity to challenge in a positive way any misconceptions, and homophobic and discriminatory attitudes that some people in society may still have towards LGBT people.”
