Stocky’s mayor backs Haiti appeal

THE MAYOR of Stockport has been thanking local residents who have been doing their bit to help victims in Haiti.

Cllr Colin MacAlister, this week thanked local residents, businesses and organisations and council employees who have donated money to help save lives in Haiti following last week’s earthquake.

The UK Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) announced that they have received £38 million in donations counted so far, less than a week since the first DEC broadcast appeal.

Mayor MacAlister said: “I would like to thank Stockport residents, businesses and council employees who have donated to the appeal, and encourage anyone else to donate what they can. Vital aid is starting to get through in larger quantities to hospitals and clinics in Haiti and is quite simply saving and rebuilding lives across the country.”

Thousands of Stockport Council employees are taking part in two ‘dress down days’ on 22nd and 29th January and donating at least £1 each to the appeal.

To make a donation to the DEC Haiti Earthquake Appeal visit or phone 0370 60 60 900, donate over the counter at any Stockport post office or high street bank, or send a cheque made payable to ‘DEC Haiti Earthquake Appeal’ to PO Box 999, London, EC3A 3AA.

Anyone wanting to stay up to date with developments in Haiti, the emergency response and the fundraising efforts can follow the DEC on twitter at or become a supporter of ‘Disasters-Emergency-Committee-DEC’ on Facebook.
