Man arrested for Muslim grave vandalism

By Will Astbury

POLICE investigating the vandalism of Muslim graves in South Manchester have made an arrest.

A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated criminal damage and has been bailed until 11 March 2010 pending further inquiries.

Officers are investigating three incidents at Southern Cemetery, Barlow Moor Road, Chorlton, that occurred during October and November 2009, when several headstones were pushed over and vandalised.

On Sunday 29 November 2009 angry Mancunians took part in a vigil at the cemetery to protest about the vandalism of the Muslim graves.

Mark Krantz, organizer of the vigil and part of Chorlton Unite Against Fascism group, said: “This attack is designed to hurt the living. It is meant to bring hurt, hatred, and division. Our response is to build unity and solidarity.”

There are growing concerns about the rise of anti-Muslim views in Britain. To read more about this subject click here to see an earlier article by Manchester Mouth.

Inquiries about the vandalism are ongoing, and police are continuing to appeal for information.

Anyone who can help is asked to call police on 0161 856 6151 or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
