Successful gay celebs: ‘Kids, aim high’

A NUMBER of successful lesbian, gay and bisexual figures are endorsing an inspirational guide which tells youngsters that sexuality isn’t a barrier to success.

The ‘Aim High’ guide, which has been created by Manchester’s The Lesbian and Gay Foundation, sees 20 prominent lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) celebrities tell their stories about how they managed to achieve at the highest level.

The likes of political figures Angela Eagle and Margot James, sports people John Amaechi and Gareth Thomas, actors Sir Ian McKellen and Antony Cotton, rock icon Beth Ditto, television entrepreneur Russell T Davies and many more are included in this important new guide.

These stories act not only as examples of how LGB people can achieve just as much success as their heterosexual counterparts but offer invaluable advice, guidance and encouragement.

Paul Martin, chief executive of The Lesbian and Gay Foundation, said: “We are honoured that so many highly successful lesbian, gay and bisexual people such as Sir Ian McKellan, Beth Ditto and Gareth Thomas have chosen to get involved in Aim High, not only are they all great role models, their stories highlight that coming out can affect anyone, but your sexuality does not affect your ability to succeed in life.”

The guide aims to encourage young LGB people to reach their goals and to show that sexual orientation should not get in the way of success in the workplace, by providing a selection of role models to draw inspiration from.

It received an enormous amount of interest from all corners of the globe when it was first conceived and it is now being made available to schools and young peoples’ centres.

“What makes the release of Aim High all the more special, is that it has been made possible by donations from people who realise the need for a guide like this, which gives young lesbian, gay and bisexual people much needed support and will help them to realise their full potential. A huge thank you goes to everyone who helped make Aim High a reality,” added Martin.
